Cycling is set to become increasingly popular with London Bike Hire sponsor, Santander getting behind a brand new cycle hire scheme in Milton Keynes due to start in spring 2016.
At the time of the announcement, Santander CEO, Nathan Bostock said: “we will be looking to share best practice between Santander Cycles in London and Milton Keynes, where it makes sense and adds value.”
At a special ‘Bikes for Business Showcase’ event on Monday 18th April, hosted by Smartgo Milton Keynes, Santander took the opportunity to update local businesses on the progress of the Bike Hire scheme and to showcase how it has promoted and developed bike facilities for staff at its Milton Keynes headquarters.
The company also showed how it can deliver business benefits such as reducing pressures on car parking as well as helping local workforces to be more productive, happier and healthier.
Santander is one of the major local businesses involved in the Smartgo Milton Keynes workplace travel network. Developed and co-ordinated by Go Travel Solutions, it provides local employers and their staff with financial, health and time saving benefits for commuting and business travel.
Phil Saunders, Business Development Manager at Go Travel Solutions said: "This was an informative and productive session with Santander and the local businesses in attendance. The debate covered barriers to getting people cycling in Milton Keynes as well as improving access and facilities, and resulted in several calls to action to help local employers and their staff to consider cycling as a travel to work option."
Jo Kenny, Project Coordinator for Red Bull Technology said: "As a long-term member of Smartgo Milton Keynes, we absolutely realise the benefits and responsibility of corporate sustainability. The Santander focus on helping staff to cycle to work is a proven model and with the major bike hire scheme scheduled to come to Milton Keynes later this year, we expect the uptake of commuting cyclists to rise further."
Bill Davies, owner of Bumble Bees commercial landscaping said: "We're not a large, corporate business but the feedback from Santander on their approach to getting staff cycling was very encouraging and we could clearly see how that could help with our own business and our staff. We're committed to exploring environmentally-friendly ways to help support our business and signed up on the day for membership of the Smartgo workplace travel network."
