With the recent announcements from global car manufacturer, Volvo that it will stop making petrol and diesel cars by 2019 in favour of electric or hybrid models and that France plans to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040, the impact of transport emissions is high up on the global news agenda.
Transport accounts for around a quarter of UK greenhouse gas emissions and affects air quality at the roadside. Our reliance on cars, vans and lorries, and the consequential impact on the environment has never been more striking.

Research released by the AA* suggested that 1 in 7 UK staff give their employers an unpaid extra half day every week by battling for, and protecting hard-fought workplace parking spaces.
This led Edmund King, AA President to propose that:
“encouraging car-sharing schemes or pushing for better public transport provision shows an acceptance of responsibility, rather than leaving their workers to drive round and round the car park in growing frustration while the bosses have their own reserved spaces”.
In the current issue of Local Transport Today (Issue 723), there is a double page feature on SmartGo, the workplace travel package developed by Go Travel Solutions. The feature written by Geoff Dudley, details the evolution of SmartGo, from working with local Leicester employer Pick Everard, to being a national scheme of over 202 employer members representing a head count of 199,000. It also details the different ways the SmartGo package can operate in areas through collaboration with other transport specialists such as WSP and the benefits it seeks to deliver.

In the Government’s Autumn Statement, the Chancellor announced plans to change how employers can support their employees with additional benefits through salary sacrifice. These changes came into effect from 1 April 2017 but how many UK businesses are aware of these changes and will anybody be caught out?
This is big news for the employee benefits sector and will certainly impact the choices available for benefit providers and employer HR managers. Businesses predicated on salary sacrifice may have to change their model.
HMRC is bringing more rigour to the salary sacrifice process and the changes announced will reduce the range of taxable benefits allowable. However, many key offerings were exempted, such as childcare, pensions, cycle to work and electric vehicle schemes.
NW Leicester project:
Go Travel Solutions is managing an engagement project for Leicester City Council focused on the businesses located in NW Leicester, specifically those businesses with premises on Bursom or Gorse Hill Industrial Estates and the surrounding area. The key objective of the project is to make both business owners and employees aware of the initiatives available through the Choose How You Move Programme which will help them to travel more sustainably and, secondly, to reduce travel barriers to new employees.
Businesses in Leicester are being encouraged to take part in a trial scheme offering reduced cost Park and Ride season tickets to their staff.
Leicester City and Leicestershire County councils have teamed up to trial a new introductory discount scheme aimed at commuters that travel into the city regularly, but who have not yet taken advantage of the Park and Ride service.
