University Of Leicester completes comprehensive review to reveal how 28,000 staff and students travel to campus

Review conducted by Go Travel Solutions shows that single car drivers have significantly decreased with increase in number of walkers over last five years

The University of Leicester has completed a comprehensive review of how the travel plans of its 28,000 staff and students have changed over the last five years. 

The review, conducted by Leicester-based sustainable travel specialist, Go Travel Solutions, revealed that the numbers of staff and students driving alone has dramatically reduced (from 49 per cent in 2010 to 37 per cent in 2015 for staff and from 9 per cent in 2010 to 5 per cent in 2015 for students). In addition, staff walking to campus has increased from 16 per cent to 21 per cent and students walking is up from 56 per cent to 62 per cent over the same time period.

The review of the University of Leicester Travel Plan included a University-wide staff and student survey, carbon calculations, GIS mapping of postcode data for bus, walk and cycle routes and advice on data capture.

Sandra Lee, Sustainability Officer at the University of Leicester said: “We are extremely proud that the previous Travel Plan was held by Leicester City Council as an exemplar Plan and that we have enabled a significant number of staff and students to choose more sustainable travel modes by providing enhanced facilities, discounts and increased travel options. The University is highly committed to sustainability and this review enables us to develop a new phase of our Travel Plan to help to reduce our environmental impact and to enhance the provision of alternatives.”

Robin Pointon, Managing Director of Go Travel Solutions added: “Since the first travel plan in 2010, the University has committed to reducing its overall environmental impact through transport related emissions. The 2015 Travel Survey has highlighted the potential for greater use of sustainable travel by staff and students with over 100 staff, who are existing single car drivers, expressing a willingness to travel more sustainably to work, for example.

East Midlands Airport helps 6,700 staff and tenants plan travel to work

East Midlands Airport has committed to a three-year partnership with Leicester-based sustainable transport specialist consultancy, Go Travel Solutions. The company will offer travel planning services and workplace travel discounts for 6,700 staff and tenants at the Airport site near Castle Donington.

Loughborough University signs corporate partnership with Go Travel Solutions

Will provide focus on sustainable travel planning for up to 4,000 staff and tenants on main University campus

Loughborough University has signed a corporate partnership agreement with sustainable transport specialist consultancy, Go Travel Solutions to focus on providing sustainable travel choices for up to 4,000 staff and tenants at its 438-acre single-site campus.

Loughborough University is looking to develop a range of measures to reduce the need for car travel to the campus. These include assessing the opportunity to develop a new bike hire scheme, measures to encourage journey sharing and more discounts and incentives for choosing sustainable travel. Go Travel Solutions will work with Loughborough University to support the development of these initiatives, not just for the benefit of Loughborough University staff but also the increasing number of businesses that are operating from the University campus.  

Leicester bids for programme to develop electrically assisted pedal cycle hubs

Leicester has submitted a bid for a major programme to develop Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) hubs.

Leicester City Council and Leicester-based sustainable travel specialist, Go Travel Solutions, have successfully progressed through the Expression of Interest stage. A full application has now been submitted to apply for a share of the £500,000 funding that the Department for Transport has made available for cities, rural areas and tourism hotspots in England, outside of London, to develop shared Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) hubs.

A recent survey of the key community transport providers in Leicester has identified five key recommendations to develop and improve local services through more effective collaboration. 

The recommendations focus on sharing journeys, sharing vehicles, sharing skills, sharing recruitment, and sharing as a network. The aim of the recommendations is to improve co-ordination of the services that community transport providers and community groups provide for the hundreds of people who use the services each year in the city.

Go Travel Solutions has appointed Kristine Bloor as its new Project Manager, based at the company’s UK South office in Bath. 

Go Travel Solutions is a specialist sustainable travel consultancy, working on a range of major transport and community-based projects in the south of England and throughout the UK. These projects and networks are helping to make local travel cheaper, easier and more sustainable for workplaces and communities.

In her new role, Kristine will be responsible for supporting projects based in the south of England. She will also plan and deliver stakeholder engagement, and the logistical management of diverse project teams for the company.
